A new ruling in United Kingdom shows Apple and Samsung rivalry heating up.
Apple, with its multiple lawsuits against Samsung Mobile, suggests that the computer turned smartphone manufacturer is not into “sitting pretty” watching Samsung flourishing and taking all the smartphone market share, and all the credits.
Samsung’s new and most popular smartphone to date, the Samsung Galaxy S II is a sexy device packed with a beastly 1.2GHzdual-core processor and the latest version of Android. Many reviewers, including Engadget, is claiming that the Samsung Galaxy S II is the best smartphone in the market today.
The site said, “It’s the best Android smartphone yet, but more importantly, it might well be the best smartphone, period.” But it looks like the South Korea-based company is not satisfied with the positive reviews and impressive sales numbers only.
According to a report posted by Wall Street Journal quoting the article written by PC Pro, Apple’s “World’s Thinnest Smartphone” promo in the company’s official website sparked a complaint from Samsung, claiming that its Galaxy S2 is skinnier. However, Advertising Standards Authority or ASA, an advertising regulator in United Kingdom, sided with the Cupertino, California-based company, and allowed Apple to use the thinnest promo run.
The report revealed that ASA received a complaint claiming that the Samsung Galaxy S II is “sexier” than the iPhone 4 because it sports 8.71 mm (with a hump of 9.91 mm) thickness only against Apple iPhone 4′s 9.33 mm. But ASA said the iPhone 4 is really the “thinnest” because the 9.33 mm profile is uniform, while the Galaxy S II and its camera and speaker humps makes it 9.91mm overall.
“Apple pointed out that the Galaxy S II had prominent bulges at the top of the device and at the bottom,” the regulator reportedly said, adding that “It acknowledged that the Galaxy S II was thinner at points, but considered that they were still entitled to make their ‘thinnest’ claim.” ASA obviously agreed that Samsung Galaxy S2′s thickest point, which is the 9.91 mm, is its overall thickness and not the phone’s 8.71 mm thinnest point. The same rule was implemented for the Apple iPhone 4, and its thickest point which is 9.33 mm, is the phone’s overall thickness.
Apparently, the Samsung Galaxy S II is expected to get another iPhone rival this year, the so-called iPhone 5. No words yet if the device is “thinner” than the current iPhone, but based on previous Apple device cycles, it is highly possible that Apple will introduce a “better” device.
Rumors say the iPhone 5 will include a dual-core processor, better RAM, an 8-megapixel primary camera, and the latest iOS 5 operating system out of the box.
Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S II or S2 is considered as the “best” Android smartphone, packed with the impressive 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos 4210 ARM Cortex A9 processor, 1 GB of dedicated RAM, an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and single LED flash, a front-facing 2-megapixel camera, and Android Gingerbread out of the box with the latest version of TouchWiz user interface.
The iPhone 5 is expected to arrive in mid-October according to multiple rumors, while the Samsung Galaxy S II or S2 is already available in major smartphone markets, and will arrive in United States on Friday courtesy of Sprint Nextel, the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch.
